How to Prevent a Frozen Septic System

The good news for some people is that they may go their entire time in a location and will never have issues with their septic system, other than having to do general maintenance. Unfortunately, this is usually a rare occurrence. If you’re reading this, chances are you have needed help with your London Ontario septic system or even worse, you’re currently experiencing a problem. If that’s the case, contact BEST Plumbing and Drainage’s 24 Hour Emergency service line at 519-438-656 right away! If you have had issues in the past, then read on for tips on how to take a proactive stance in preventing a frozen septic system in the future.

Layer up Your London Ontario Septic System

If your septic system has been installed later in the year and has not yet had the chance to establish any vegetative cover naturally, make sure you take matters into your own hands.  You can do this by simply placing an 8-12 inch layer of mulch over the entire septic system.  This will provide it with extra insulation during the winter.  Your mulch can be any loose material that will stay in place such as straw, leaves or hay.  If your system is currently frozen, then do not do this, as it will delay thawing come spring.

Another technique you could do for your septic system maintenance is to let your lawn get a little longer during the end of the summer season.  Longer grass over the septic system provides extra insulation and helps to protect against any snow.

Plan Your Absences Accordingly

There are several ways to employ some septic system maintenance before or during a winter vacation:

  • Have someone use water in your home regularly while you’re away.
  • Pump out your tank before leaving.  Note that if you live in an area with a high water table, only pump the tank if it was designed for high water table conditions.

Do Some Tune Ups around the Home

Fixing leaking plumbing fixtures or appliances will go a long way to improving your septic system maintenance. These minor repairs can help prevent freezing and prolong the life of your unit. You could also install a small condensation pump that holds and discharges water each cycle.  If you are unsure about how to proceed, contact BEST for advice concerning your septic system.

Keep an Eye on Things

You can prevent problems with your London Ontario septic system by simply keeping an eye on the unit:

  • Ensure that all types of vehicle storage and high traffic activities take place away from the system.  Good advice all year round.
  • Make sure all risers, inspection pipes and manholes have covers on them.  Making sure they are properly sealed and adding insulation is a good idea as well.
  • Keep an eye out for any seeping or ponding around your system.  Contact the professionals at BEST Plumbing and Drainage if you have concerns.
